24 Hour Combat Rations

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a soldier regards the contents of a 24 Hour Combat Ration as terrible - whereas those of allied or coalition forces are always superior.

Soldiers will give cruel, tasteless or obscene nicknames for the contents of the packs of food issued to them - but they are always hungry and the food never gets wasted.

Logistics

A couple of years ago before the merger of the DLO (Defence Logistics Organisation) and DPA (Defence Procurement Agency) the DLO had a mission statement Deliver Logistics for Operations by: Supporting the front line throughout the preparation, deployment, sustainment and recovery of an operation to deliver mission success. Being agile and responsive to changing needs in peace and in conflict. Developing logistic capabilities to meet future demands.

CDL's (Chief Defence Logistics) vision was to deliver our mission statement so that we build:Confidence in Logistics

Further to the merger of the DLO and DPA, the MoD has transformed in many ways in regards to logistics. Some good and some questionable. With much equipment used by logisticians today from software, ICT, ships, aircraft to a myriad of land vehicles, G4 DEFENCE aims to give an overview of the what, where’s and how the supply chain works and whether there is Confidence in Logistics

Many in the field rely heavily on the right equipment, spare parts, rations and ammunition reaching them before they run out particularly if they are on the frontline engaged in fighting. The supply route in country needs to remain open and secure otherwise the much needed supplies would not reach the intended recipients in time.

Lessons identified from current operations include limitations in country by private contractors meaning the technology, capability and means for onward supply from port of entry needs to be in the hands of servicemen and women. Protection of the transportation, tracking, supply control, the people, the goods, the ability to locate the enemy, obstruction or threat and report safely back the precise coordinate’s means that logisticians need to be skilled in new technologies as well as basic soldiering to serve efficiently on the frontline.

Accommodation

Accommodation both in the field and at home is vital for not only moral but the much needed rest. Fatigue in operations can be as fatal as a bullet so it goes without question a soldier when off patrol needs to relax and recharge in comfortable surroundings that offer protection but most importantly afford the soldier a good night’s sleep.

Back home it’s a different environment however providing the armed forces with the homes they deserve that are not substandard and that are modern. Whether living in single accommodation or married quarters the quality of the dwelling has to be up to scratch and indeed habitable. Much work has been done thus far by the Defence Estates with programmes such as SLAM (Single Living Accommodation Modernisation) and SFA (Service Families Accommodation) but more needs to be done. From the DE Strategy for 2009, paragraph 6 it states,

The Defence Living Accommodation Strategy restates the importance of accommodation in attracting and retaining sufficient, capable and motivated personnel. The strategy seeks to pursue the best options, both public and private, for funding and delivering quality accommodation, while also seeking to meet the increasing aspirations among Service personnel for home ownership. It envisages that future provision of accommodation will be through the ‘mixed economy’, which is a combination of the Department’s traditional publicly funded providers and private property owned or rented by individual Service personnel. The ‘mixed economy’ should also reduce demand for Service Families Accommodation (SFA) in the UK. However, this may be offset by the entitlement of Ghurkhas to Married Accompanied Service and, towards the end of the period, by further repatriations from Germany and the Permanent Joint Overseas Bases (PJOBs). As regards Single Living Accommodation (SLA), the Department’s policy to provide single en-suite rooms for all trained personnel living in Service accommodation will be a significant driver.

Sharing the best practice between not only our forces but coalition forces will ensure solutions to provide the best for the frontline are delivered. G4 DEFENCE aims to examine the lessons, strategies, improvements and solutions throughout its issues.
